Ok, I am a very disorganized person. I have comics, books, magazines... and the other usual crap discarded around my house. Yet I give myself the illusion of organization. For years I was a man lost in a jungle of comics. I bought what jumped at me, and what Iwas familiar with... eventually surviving on only Daredevil... regurgitating and then digesting back issues. I was surviving.
And now... now that I am home. In my hometown. Where the jungle is not surrounding me, but rather I am helping to keep it flourishing. Ok, even I am getting tired of metaphorically speaking. I now am the deciding factor in what I want to buy... thanks in no small part to the internet... and before that Marvel Previews. Where as before I would have been left sulking at having missed a DD appearance. Now if there is even a mention of DD... I probably have the title. Aside from the X-titles (which let's be honest would probably be my current budget and then some) which I do not really like. Add to that occasional minis and other characters that never held my interest. And I am getting the rest of it.
I now know about titles it seems long before my retailer. So, it makes it only a little frustrating in the respect, that he questions my preorder of a title, even after I saw it in Marvel Previews. Preordering may be a customer's way of really supporting a title, but at least here, it sucks. Which leads into the paperback envy. I love TPBs, I love HCs... I even like the little digests... to a lesser extent. But I cannot justify buying the single issue and also the TPBs. I can't even really justify buying a TPB of something I don't have. I have a great friend who also has a love of the collected format, and I am envious. But unlike this guy Jon Knutson (who has a great blog, and a nice column too) I have not seen pictures of her collection... which just in the the last few weeks has grown.
I think I need a job.

You wanna risk it... go ahead. This ain't Disney, after all. Just remember ... everybody is somebody's waste of time. With any luck even you and your non-fans can share that sentiment.
#12: Who at Marvel would be your assistant and successor as the next Editor in Chief? (Writers & Artists encouraged)
I can't really say exactly. Somebody with a head for longevity... with a sense that while Marvel is an empire... every comic is somebody's first. Push your fan boy aside and consult the past. Perhaps Shooter, although then I have to wonder who would stay?
#13: What would be the most obscure Marvel character that you'd green light a miniseries for? (Creative team optional)
Madrox... Same team as the mini of course.
#14: How many "X" titles do you allow a month to be published?

They are welcome to submit and do stories for Unlimited if they wish. There are some bad celeb writers... fair is fair.

Tough call. But creative teams get creative input... too much feces in the toilet as there is.

I would take a lesson from Conan. And do a story every 7 issues or so. That has been really effective to me as a reader. A chance to tell a story if the sub-writer can tell a story. And the regular series guys can take a break.

If I were a rich man... and I had control of the MU
#01: If you had to narrow Marvel Comics down to twelve titles a month, what would those twelve comics be?
Okay, this is tough, if I am playing the role TPTB (and hypothetically I am). Then diversity is the key more so then preference. I would keep Peter David's upcoming Spider title. Really Amazing has gone through the crapper... and Marvel Knights though trying for a back to the roots approach is failing. Any newcomers are not going to go by author yet, and having only one new Spider title might pull them in.
The FF are cornerstones... so the main title can stay. The Hulk would have to be there. The X-men... though I would cut off the spin-offs and let Whedon take the helm... new numbering and one title would help with newcomers too. Runaways would have to stay. And Supreme Power. I would also keep Amazing Fantasy, but not with it's current slate. I love the idea of new titles and characters being introduced in arcs of this title. If not Amazing Fantasy, then call it Marvel Unlimited... with the same purpose. Marvel Team Up could stay as well. New Avengers and Young Avengers along with a revamped Marvel kids line... at the helm is McKeever and a group of other indy children's comics writers. That's at least 12.
#02: In your opinion, what is Marvel's best creation?
The start issues... every origin issue is the best. And not only limited to our heroes... villians and love interests. Marvel knows how to make an entrance.
#03: Are sound effects really all that important any more or do they mar the artwork and insult the reader's intelligence?
Sound effects are essential. Not your pows or whams or Kabooms... but your musical notes... effects used to convey sound. Could even be a striking color(s).. I think the artist needs to make a picture sell itself... if you are doing your best... it will be shown.
#04: Do you put all the advertisements in the back of the comic after the story or spread the ads throughout the issue like commercials?
I have tended to like what Marvel did with the freebie issue. Some in the front and some in the back. That might be the best time to sell the product. So the story can flow uninterrupted.
#05: Who were the creative team of your first Marvel Comic you ever read, and if they are still with us, would you hire them on to one of your titles?
Karl Kesel and Cary Nord. Yes, Kesel is and Nord is working hard on Conan... and yes I would hire them to do anything with Marvel together or seperately. And I would read it religiously. The talent there cannot be denied... even if the sales numbers might.
#06: Of all the alternate future possible timelines for the Marvel Universe, which is your favorite? And would you elaborate upon the concept, or leave it as it is?
I like both 2099 (original) and Exiles. I would probably try a proper 2099 revival. At least leave the prospect optional in my Marvel Unlimited title. And if Exiles fans needed the book, I would bring it back with demand.
#07: Who would be your personal favorite of all Marvel writers?

Longevity on a title is sacred today. Boys and girls... stay as long as you like... wait till your fingers callous. And after that stay with Marvel, you are all my favorites.
#10: Should a creator (writer or artist) be allowed to return to a title for a story arc to retcon a glitch the fans hated? (For example, if you didn't like the whole Sin's Past storyline regarding Gwen Stacy & Norman Osborne’s kids, could Stan Lee be called in to fix it?)
I would allow that. A writer should be allowed to elaborate on past stories. After all Strazynski got to... nuff said. Just don't take a crap on the mythos.

Riddle Remembered
I didn't grow up with the Adam West version of Batman. I grew up hearing everything about it... see when one is a comic fan, this is a generational connector for other family members (or they think it is). And really one cannot help but see the effective simplicity of the series, it was just all out fun and excitement. We can all look back now and wonder why the Batcave's biggest foe seemed to be someone with a trigger finger on a label maker. But there were characterizations... mannerisms that stuck. And I think none better than Frank Gorshin's Riddler... say what you will about the comic before the show... or the show after the comic. One thing is true Gorshin did the job superbly. Perhaps, the best thing I can think is that when my Grandmother saw Batman Forever, the one comment that stuck in my mind, "Jim Carrey doesn't hold a candle to the original... the man with the rubber face." I know others will talk about this, but I wanted to add my thoughts, as a most casual and admiring observer.
Comics to Come
CONAN #16 $2.99- Back to the norm for this title as Cary Nord returns with Kurt Busiek for the start of a fresh arc. This title is one that is easy to hold on to, even if you are not a fan of what you have experienced as Conan, this is always a solid story with highly complimentary art. Aided by DD colorist Dave Stewart this is my sleeper title. No doubt.
BLACK PANTHER #4 $2.99- Romita Jr. is the reason I get this title. This is a competant title, but it just feels to be going nowhere. Add to that, there is not enough to care where it goes. Not to long until this arc ends... I will probably make my decision then.
DAREDEVIL #73 $2.99- I am seriously loving this arc. Religious in title.... powerful in tone. A series of (thus far) done in ones about the citizens of Hell's Kitchen. And the seemingly loose connection to Daredevil. Last issue was exploratory on so many levels. Familial relationships, the effects of crime, and the use and examination of vigilante justice on a most human level. No tights... just a man with a purpose.
MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #14 $2.99- I am fond of saying that Spidey is one of the easiest characters to read. Even at the worst of the title... something you remember or are fond of remains... the foundations of the characters. Marvel has really put that to the test as of late in most mainstream stuff. Hudlin (Black Panther) seems to want Peter Parker back to his roots, a noble effort to be sure. Honestly, I am weary of the application... I am hanging in there. Yet again it is not a bad story, it is just that there is a loose grasp on the characters and developments on a whole. Let's just say Peter David and Mike 'Ringo's title can't start soon enough. That is the return to the root of Spidey that I am anxious to see.
MARVEL MUST HAVES NYX #1-3 $4.99 - I plan to get this one, I asked for this.... whether or not my shop remembered is another story. I ended up snatching a copy of NYX#1 for a dollar, and my sister loved it. So I am picking this up to... plus I have been wanting a peek at the Marvel Must Haves.
SPIDER-MAN HUMAN TORCH #4 (OF 5) $2.99- This has been a fun fun fun comic. Sadly, it is winding down. The funny thing is, that even in it's time spanning, comic crossing, done in one format. I still love it. Slott made me love the FF, I would read the FF by him. I would say give the man a Spidey title (if not for the glut) it is long overdue. Dan Slott is writing the comics I have to read. And love to read month after month.
WOLVERINE #28 $2.25- Well, this time Romita, Jr. is not the only reason I am picking up this title. Millar is doing a fantastic job, he may not pull at the heart strings, and he can be a bit showy. But this is all Wolverine, and truth be told he is a bad ass. No matter what he is franchised to be. Claremont and Byrne knew it... Millar knew it. The guy making his new movie knows it. Sure the conflict of morality in recent years is great... but just because nothing is neater to see then a bad ass with a conscience.
YOUNG AVENGERS #4 $2.99- Guess what? The newbies... the amatuers... Those youngsters whose grandparents were in diapers when Captain America was recruited to fight for all things American and Just... yeah, um they were right. And Captain America and Iron Man... well they kind of locked them in a room for their own good. Big mistake. If you aren't getting this comic... it's a shame, literally there is probably something for everybody.
TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST #2 $2.39- I decided to keep getting this, even though it is not a digest I normally enjoy. I am fairly straightforward on my Archie books, I like Jughead... I try to keep it that way. If I branch out to much, I might end up picking up the whole line of digests. I loved the yearbook format of the first issue. Well done, and loaded with bits of trivial knowledge and good humor. But on the whole... I don't like titles that feature the spin off characters. I don't care for Josie and the Pussycats... or Sabrina. But it is a small price to pay to find one obscure character I will enjoy.
COMICS BUYERS GUIDE JULY 2005 #1606 $5.99- Yeah, I thought it was time for a little reminder. This is a great publication. It doesn't rely on hype to fuel it's articles... and doesn't try to fill space with fluff. This is 244 pages of awesome information. Now they may not have hype... but they also don't have Wizard's sale #'s so if you know someone who is a fan of Star Wars... or who is hooked after the film. Give them a little nudge towards CBG this month, as The Revenge of the Sith will be featured throughout.

Why do you read comics?
I think I read comics for the same reasons most people do. First and foremost is nostalgia. To be this addicted I had to have started young. I have a fondness for Spider-Man, my first comic series. And it is rare but nostalgia can occur from series to series. I have a great rememberance of Spider-Man 2099 (my first spin-off of my regular Spidey habit), of Karl Kesel's run on Daredevil, and no doubt years from now, I will be nostalgic about She-Hulk or something like that. But I read comics today, because some of the best stories are being told, and I want to enjoy them while I can. And I love the escape.
What are the things that first got you into comics and what keeps you reading?
Some of the first things that hooked me ... was the fluid and operatic storytelling. Everything was larger than life, and despite the fact that I would have been in way over my head, I would have traded places with Spidey any day. I still read today, because comics are addictive by nature, I find it takes alot for me to leave a comic. Usually a conflict of morals and beliefs. It is easy to keep me reading, just pretty hard to get me to stop.
Was there ever a time when you stopped reading comics?
The only time I have stopped entirely was because I could no longer afford to do so. That was a long time ago. In fact, it was back when I was dependent on trips to the grocery store with my mom and dad. How long ago was it that comics were lining the checkout lanes? That should give you some idea.
What brought you back?
The good times of Karl Kesel's Daredevil. And watching with pure joy the evolution of an up and comer Cary Nord. Then... dropping my jaw at the raw and sketchy pencils of Gene Colan. I don't think comics will ever be that good for me again. But they will come pretty close. Nostalgia and escape just thinking about it. *sigh*

I still read today, because comics are addictive by nature, I find it takes alot for me to leave a comic. Usually a conflict of morals and beliefs. It is easy to keep me reading, just pretty hard to get me to stop.
Was there ever a time when you stopped reading comics?
The only time I have stopped entirely was because I could no longer afford to do so. That was a long time ago. In fact, it was back when I was dependent on trips to the grocery store with my mom and dad. How long ago was it that comics were lining the checkout lanes? That should give you some idea.
What brought you back?
The good times of Karl Kesel's Daredevil. And watching with pure joy the evolution of an up and comer Cary Nord. Then... dropping my jaw at the raw and sketchy pencils of Gene Colan. I don't think comics will ever be that good for me again. But they will come pretty close. Nostalgia and escape just thinking about it. *sigh*

Panel to Panel Reviews
Marvel Team-Up #8- One of my favorite things to do with people... is to let them talk it throws them off. People will say much more than they intend to, if you can keep a straight face. I have never quite read a comic like this... not really. I know Bendis likes his talking heads, but this is a bit much, this was like hearing your friend tell that same annoying story he always tells you.... and then repeating it for emphasis. This issue had Blade (The Vampire Slayer) meeting Punisher... while I can believe Punisher might not know there are vampires... I can't believe the readers of this title wouldn't. Blade was very much out of character I thought, he could have essentially been reciting from the phone book. If you were on the fence for getting this issue... don't. Wait for next month, it won't be as hard to catch up as I thought.
Marvel Adventures #3- I am not the target audience... I am not the target audience... I am not the target audience. Ok, for those who read my review of last month's issue.. you know that I had quite a few problems with it... in the aspect of it being a second issue... it made no sense. So, I won't bring that up for this issue, although it still proves a glaring flaw. There was alot of quick fixes in this issue... not surprising. Stan was a master of not only pulling a rabbit out of a hat... but he could seemingly pull several. I did laugh out loud at one point though, Spider-Man was pulled under water by Dr. Octopus while Aunt May watched on, and expressing her concern. J. Jonah Jameson only makes the comment that his cell phone finally has reception. Classic. I think I have a new phrase to pull through ... Sean McKeever is coming to write, well worth the wait.
Arana: Heart of the Spider #4- So, I had a mini rant the other day about not being able to let go of certain comics. This is one of those. It has been consistently... okay. Nothing spectacular. Which brings me to a certain web-headed cameo. Spider-Man was bound to show up at some point... plenty of foreshadowing has tied him to this title from the start. This was your classic Spider-mentor cameo, Spidey comes in for pep talk... the problem being? Well, he seemed to have a purpose for showing up... on top of that almost seeking out the young hero of this book. Yet it is never explained why... the whole issue left me less than impressed.
Fallen Angel #20- This was a finale for this series... sort of. I would like to see Marvel take on this title with Peter David, in their Icon line or something. It has already been strongly hinted that some other publisher aside from DC will pick this up. This issue served as a reintroduction for me, having only read a TPB. This title is dark... without being overbearingly so. The title bleeds corruption from all sides... and there is just enough great character interaction to make one want to follow this title to the ends of the earth. Nice finale ... if you could call it that.
Desolation Jones #1- Okay, some people just are not going to get this. No, I don't mean the comic (although that could be likely too). Some people are not going to get that this reminds me of Bogart... specifically "The Deep". Detective is contacted by an ederly rich man, detective is not your average good guy. One daughter completely full of herself, and far too out of the loop then she could ever know. And another daughter on the run and in trouble far too deep. I don't think Warren Ellis drew his inspiration from that, but I would like to think so. There are similarities, but nothing even remote to link the two. Desolation Jones is a fascinating character... in a fascinating world... tackling the most disgusting of tasks that the citizens of LA toss at him.
Mary Jane: Homecoming #3- I am surrounded with near perfect story telling. This story was aptly titled "The Regret Thing". Mary Jane has worked so hard (through two minis) for this one night. The most important night of her life... next to prom... next to her wedding... next to the birth of a child. Being the recluse that I am... I look fondly back on school dances. For several moments durning the year... these social mating rituals were life or death. Until you put it in the perspective of Spidey. I have to admit that in the little bit of time Spider-Man has in this title McKeever makes him absolutely and flawlessly shine. This is just a fun book, month in and month out.
Marvel Nemesis: The Imperfects #1- You know the strangest thing? I knew what was going on... and it is not as if anything plot wise here is a surprise. Four heroes... mutated ... again (for some). It is no secret this is a license tie-in... if the hype did not give it away... the striking resemblance of two characters to their movie counter-parts will. Are characters out of character... yeah. Is it in continuity... no idea. Was it worth it... time will tell. I will give credit where credit is due some of the art is absolutely creepy. Kudos to the artist and colorist for unexpected results here.

Mi LCS es tu LCS
There is a problem with being reclusive. There are too few people to tell you that you just dropped from the edge of acceptable. I am obsessed with comics... used to be just Spider-Man and Daredevil. And I didn't realize this then, but it used to be very very limited. Now it is pretty much the entire Marvel Universe. If I am not reading about a title... I either know what is going on... or I can find out. By now, you have seen the reviews, there is not a week, where I don't have a comic waiting for me.
I like to think I am pretty limited still, I read pretty much from Marvel. And I read pretty much only what I like. Now I don't know about you, but I am beginning to find out that for me, what I like is becoming more and more relaxed by the month. And I rarely have sense enough to figure to tell myself when I am just buying a title to collect it. Not even enjoying what I read. And now... now with Free Comic Book Day... there are indies calling my name. This is the one time I am hoping my LCS is as dependent on not finding the Indy stuff as he seems.
Expect reviews on Friday... I am still resting. Oh and Happy Birthday to Michael Diaz's column, What Looks Good, now celebrating it's second year. Head over there to find out how to get some good free stuff, he is truly a more giving guy than me and maybe find out about some comics that you might enjoy. Tell him Justin sent you (he won't know who that is but) I always wanted to say that.

FCBD Part 2
Star Wars- This is an obvious choice for Darkhorse comics. No doubt there are hordes and hordes of people inticed by the final chapter in this saga. And the public needn't wait but a week before it hits theatres. It is an enjoyable story, if a bit formulaic... and yet confusing. Anakin (Darth Vader) Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi set out to find two sources to the shift of power towards the Dark Side. Anakin in his head strong attempts to attack first and think later, inadvertantly sabotages the mission. There is a sequence in which Anakin confides to Obi-Wan that he has more desire than just having peace and the dark side eliminated forever. Obi-Wan only makes the comment that these desires are very un-Jedi like. More foreshadowing continues... not much conflict... rather this teases and then sets the stage for a much bigger battle to follow. This title, and many of it's spin-off titles are readily available.
Betty And Veronica- Well, it was definetly a different approach from Archie Comics company. But I have to wonder what the pay off is. I am sure collectors snatched this up, apparently this is the first appearance of a character from a few yesteryears ago... Katy Keene. The only objective that this comic seemed to accomplish for me was to make the issue feel dated. The obvious difference between the artistic look of Katy Keene to the rest of the Riverdale girls, made her seem quite alien. I would have much prefered this story to have Bridget as a top model... as it is the story had as much inspiration as a Barbie doll. Even more puzzling was that DC merchandise filled the advertisements of this comic, with only one devoted to Archie products. I am not sure what audience Archie wanted to grab with this comic. But I hope it appealed to someone.
Festival- This was a compilation of comics from a variety of people from all over the world. Apparently all of which will be at the Toronto Comics Art Festival. The problem with comic books of such a large variety, is that sometimes the brief introduction you do get to a comic might not be enough to hook you with. There are many cute stories... thought-provoking snippets... and stunning art to be found in this title. From a story about an old comic buyer who was snooty and yet had an effect on many retailers. Another story of a young female wizard who is found out by a nosy neighbor... but eventually wins him over to the rewards of magic. A story about a man who once had a desire to fight Bruce Lee, quite hilarious. Sweet sentimental stories... tales that border the bizarre. There was an untitled project by Leslie Stien ... whose artistic flexibility astounds me as much as David Mack. There are more well-known projects such as Love As A Foreign Language. The problem lies in that this is a comic to promote a festival. Expect to do some digging to find your favorite creator's stuff, but then... a little digging never hurt anyone.
Roninhood of the 47th Samurai- This is another fine offering from Beckett. There is a trend in some of the better comics of the past few years... to have deceptively simple art. Powers being another prime example. Last year Beckett did a rather original concept on the fabled Sleeping Beauty tale. This year they take you into Japan, into the 1700s, into a story so familiar it will leave the taste of Disney and Kevin Costner strong in the back of your throat. But yet again, what you know of Robinhood, is taken and tossed on it's tail. Beckett has won me over... no doubt this and a couple of other TPBs will be lining my shelves.
Mortal Coils Presents- You have entered the Twilight Zone... well sort of. I am not sure Mortal Coils started off with the best title to begin this comic. Godpoint is some sort of time travel story. Our main characters... two women somehow know each other. And somehow know that everytime they wake up somewhere, it will be a new place, on the way to their own time and world. It would be nice to let in on any of these developments... but we aren't. And it seemingly ends as confusing as it began. Pit Stop was by far more fascinating, slightly less confusing. As we are peeking in on two travelers... one has a goal... while the other is left to wander. Upon her wanderings... one traveler comes across a man who possesses a book of some importance to the woman. Upon prying it becomes rather obvious that the man is not the person she seeks... but rather a lovesick broken hearted man... who has stolen his ex-girlfriend's property. As punishment... she shows the man... the life and love he would have had... and then twists the events of fate... so that he never finds this new love, and must live alone forever... all for stealing a book. Wouldn't you know it, she's a librarian (just kidding). The final comic brought a smile to my face... a bit of a parody on portals and alternate realities and superheroes called, "I Didn't Know This Place Had A Cellar", it should be found by following that link.
Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge- There is no denying the talent possessed by Carl Barks. There is no denying that Disney is a great outlet for kid's comics. Disney goes all out reprinting the first Uncle Scrooge comic ever published. It is the most requested reprint they recieve. Kids will find fun in it too, it may be dated, but it is the Scrooge that many of us have known for years. Yet again this year, Disney goes with a classic. And it still works on many levels.
Arcana Studios Presents- This offers up some pretty dark stuff... needless to say, it ain't for the kiddos of your household. Some pretty intriguing stuff though, particularly 100 girls. For fans of Crimson... or the Cliffhanger line from DC... this is a nice title to fill that void. So for those of you missing some of the more gothic and dark entertainment this will be a nice title to try out. I even think I might get a title from this company, though it will be one that is decidly more light-hearted and fun.
Funny Book- This is an underground and adult group of selections from Fantagraphics. Among them are a few treasures. If you have a desire to let your wings spread to the most indy of FCBD, this would most likely be it. With so many different comics highlighted, it kind of put too many hands in the pot. Although it seems stories from the series Love And Rockets dominates.
Impact University- This is yet again a book that not only highlights the making of comics. It is all about the process. And they pulled no punches, top creators like Peter David and the late Will Eisner offer there insights and tips. The art touches on a great many things from the more common comic book art style... to the increasingly popular Manga style. Yet again a company that goes for resource over entertainment, and it works so well, that I would be hard pressed not to encourage this sort of comic in monthly installments. Of course for money.
Tokyopop Sneaks- By far the most ambitious genre-spanning free comic out there. Over 150 pages of comic... for free. A seemingly confusing aspect... one side you read in a "comic book manner" as accustomed, the other is read in a "manga" manner as the author intended. While all the stories are for a teen audience. There really is quite a bit to offer to even the most discerning reader. Pick this up for an assortment of stories... an abundance of quality. For those looking for the biggest freebie out there... this is it.
Flight- Image's surprising freebie. Somehow Image caught on to the fact that storytelling is at it's most enjoyable when it can be a family activity. This comic plays off the fact that no matter how old, every adult was a child. And every child dreams, and sometimes it is nice to see what one used to believe was possible. It is nice to remember that if you have enough fantasy, enough playfulness and you set out to tell a good story. A spectacular event occurs... a child's eyes will light up, and for a moment, they don't have to grow up so fast... and neither do you.
Whew... that was pretty exhausting. Any chance you publisher's could send me next year's selection early... like now. I need all the time in the world.

Free Comics Part 1
If you missed May 7th and a trip to your local shop for some free loot. Well, then no doubt you missed out. The following will critique each of the 19 free comic books that I managed to snag during that day. A large amount for my small town... and I even missed out on a couple I could have gotten at a later time. It seems that in the local bookstore free comic day was a huge success.
Bone Sharps, Cowboys and Thunder Lizards- This is an eye-catching cover. I am not so sure how the design of the issue itself stood out. They chose to have their booklet made in what I can only say, is a wide-screen format. Right off the bat I am pulled in with the silly "THE FOLLOWING PREVIEW HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR ALL AUDIENCES" annoying at a movie theatre ... quite original in a comic. It goes on to give a web address. For which... the tagline shares a sentiment to mirror my thinking. "Comics about scientists... what a dangerous experiment." The story is really quite involved, at times highly ficticious, and stays true to being a period piece. Great mystery to uncover in the time of the Wild West. Perhaps another favorite part to this is a behind the scenes look at the end, it cements the fact that this was truly a labor of love. And upon viewing the website, I will at least be picking up one of their projects. Mission Accomplished.
Bongo Comics Giveaway- This one is a pretty straightfoward selection from Bongo. And there is nothing wrong with that. Marvel and DC have been putting their heavy hitters to bat on Comic Day, why should the Simpsons and Futurama not be the key players in this book? One thing I am looking for in this year's selection of books is how available they make future copies to a reader. Unless you are Marvel, DC, or Image (on rare occasion) you are going to have to do a bit more than "Ask for it at your comic retailer" That is just not an effective selling point. Especially with the selections in the back of the book, which attracted me the most Roswell and Heroes Anonymous... neither of which have anything at all to do with the Simpsons. Given the option of searching the web, or going to a comic shop to inquire and then get stared at and finally given the cliche answer "I will see what I can do." I will take my chances from the comfort of my own home.
Wizard Top 100 Trade Paperbacks of all Time- This is a great resource... really. This may well be my most reused find from FCBD. There is something to be said for choosing to do a free comic book about Comic Books... and what better format than the TPB. Readily available at many many fine venues... and with a resource like this ... it is a safe bet that you get your money's worth. This is the type of thing you take with you out of town. You hit a shop or a bookstore... pull it out, and make an informed purchase. Wizard gets Kudos for giving a comic that is suitable for both the new collector or the old. Or those wanting something a bit more relaxed to accompany Tolstoy and Dostoevsky on the bookshelf.
Flare- This issue is bogged down by a rather unfortunate problem. It is absolutely dripping in the tired reasoning that "Sex Sells". and however true it may be... to have a different approach might keep a new customer. Heroic Publishing is a well-crafted attempt to cash in on the fleeting concept that once made Image popular... flashy art alone will sell a comic. There is very little originality to be seen in the first preview. In fact it is so bogged down in stuff we have seen before, that a lack of back story is hardly noticable. I don't know Flare's powers, but I assume they are in a pretty broad range... an explanation would have been nice... but it is very very far from necessary. The next two stories were a bit more fun. They both had a Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe detective feel, that I just devour. The website appears to be very helpful. But if I do purchase anything, it will have to stretch the norm alot more... I am already paying for Super Hero stories... and getting alot better stories.
Johnny Raygun Freebie FCBD Edition- This is a fun little introduction to a comic that doesn't want to be taken seriously. It is not my kind of humor, but there is alot of heart here. It seems to be a nice addition to those that like there comics to poke a bit of fun... and play with the rules a bit. The publisher page at the end made me smile... looks to be a lot of work for minimal pay-off. I might consider tracking this down. Oh, and Publishers... I know you love your retailer... the brick and mortar guys... I love mine too. But that doesn't mean you are not going to be the best chance of me getting your comic. So thanks for the web address, yet again.
Devil's Due Press- This was a pretty good selection I have to say. I am not a fan of GI Joe. So I tried to read this and inevitably gave up from lack of interest. But in a second story there is a second story, about a group of teens given mysterious "powers" being shadowed by the government and unable to tell their parents. Sound familiar. Teen comics are trying to be a growing trend in the Marvel Universe. Defex showed a pretty strong grasp on plot, art, and character interaction. And since it is creator Marv Wolfman, I might just have to seek this out. Now... on the back of this comic is another offering from Udon ... no doubt to appeal to the Manga crowd. Their comic is from a licensed property of Capcom (a video game company) .

Take one property of escalating box office popularity... and another property which has Marvel investors hoping it will be gaining popularity in the coming months, and give the kiddos a taste for free... of both Spider-Man and The Fantastic Four. These is probably one of the more popular comics of the Silver Age... when Spidey tries to join with the FF... he wants money and public recognition. Anyway, a nice little retelling with some good art to go along. But you know, when I was a kid, I wanted nothing more than a peek at what makes those cogs turn, I wanted to know how to do everything to make my own comic. Well, Marvel grants that wish with an additional sneak peek "behind the scenes". I think it gets the point across... in a straightfoward fashion. I know for other reviews I have been saying... they need an alternative to the "go see your retailer" This is one bunch of titles you should be able to find with relative ease. BUZZBOY ROBOY MAJOR DAMAGE TRIPLE FROSTED FUN - Long title ... Fun cover. "Who knew comics could be this much fun again?!" This is a question that appeals to both the nostalgia-riddled and the potential new customer. If Flight was my favorite surprise of FCBD... Buzzboy was the comic that met and exceeded my expectations. From the get-go this comic proved it has alot of love for animation... and simplicity. Leave it to the Speedster of the super team to constantly be doing a running commentary. The first story is pretty straightfoward... but has loads of fun. A group of kids get jumbled up in a time-traveling mess. Thanks to a bad guy from an alternate reality. Things get wrapped up in outrageous fashion... and then you are treated to a "How To Draw" segment. Even more impressive than the first story, is the one about Major Damage. A little boy abducted by aliens and turned into one of his favorite heroes. This is the story of his journey back to his own house... looking nothing like the little boy he was. It is touching and very well illustrated... it shows the down side of wanting something, and then regretting the results. A frequent lesson, but still an important one when told so well. This is most definetly a comic I will be seeking out. Yet another is the story of Roboy ... told quite well by peering through the scrap book of a supporting character... there is a Disney-esque parody. And a story of a cartoon... updated for the Techno-age. I question the comic book's Halloween setting ... but it no doubt helped to fuel Roboy's hilarity. Through each story you are treated to a "How to Draw" segment. And at the tale end is all sorts of goodies. Including a then teenage comic artist creation of a super team, and now that he is famous his jaw-dropping rendition... very inspiring. Each of the websites I have highlighted promise fun and games... and though I have not seen them yet. I have no doubt they deliver. Okay, this is the first installment of FCBD reviews. I hope it was informative. I guess since most retailers and even bookstores and such might be scrambling to get rid of some of their selection. I will give my top recommendation now and that is Image's offering "Flight". See ya tomorrow with a gaggle full of comic reviews.
Bone Sharps, Cowboys and Thunder Lizards- This is an eye-catching cover. I am not so sure how the design of the issue itself stood out. They chose to have their booklet made in what I can only say, is a wide-screen format. Right off the bat I am pulled in with the silly "THE FOLLOWING PREVIEW HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR ALL AUDIENCES" annoying at a movie theatre ... quite original in a comic. It goes on to give a web address. For which... the tagline shares a sentiment to mirror my thinking. "Comics about scientists... what a dangerous experiment." The story is really quite involved, at times highly ficticious, and stays true to being a period piece. Great mystery to uncover in the time of the Wild West. Perhaps another favorite part to this is a behind the scenes look at the end, it cements the fact that this was truly a labor of love. And upon viewing the website, I will at least be picking up one of their projects. Mission Accomplished.
Bongo Comics Giveaway- This one is a pretty straightfoward selection from Bongo. And there is nothing wrong with that. Marvel and DC have been putting their heavy hitters to bat on Comic Day, why should the Simpsons and Futurama not be the key players in this book? One thing I am looking for in this year's selection of books is how available they make future copies to a reader. Unless you are Marvel, DC, or Image (on rare occasion) you are going to have to do a bit more than "Ask for it at your comic retailer" That is just not an effective selling point. Especially with the selections in the back of the book, which attracted me the most Roswell and Heroes Anonymous... neither of which have anything at all to do with the Simpsons. Given the option of searching the web, or going to a comic shop to inquire and then get stared at and finally given the cliche answer "I will see what I can do." I will take my chances from the comfort of my own home.
Wizard Top 100 Trade Paperbacks of all Time- This is a great resource... really. This may well be my most reused find from FCBD. There is something to be said for choosing to do a free comic book about Comic Books... and what better format than the TPB. Readily available at many many fine venues... and with a resource like this ... it is a safe bet that you get your money's worth. This is the type of thing you take with you out of town. You hit a shop or a bookstore... pull it out, and make an informed purchase. Wizard gets Kudos for giving a comic that is suitable for both the new collector or the old. Or those wanting something a bit more relaxed to accompany Tolstoy and Dostoevsky on the bookshelf.
Flare- This issue is bogged down by a rather unfortunate problem. It is absolutely dripping in the tired reasoning that "Sex Sells". and however true it may be... to have a different approach might keep a new customer. Be Back Monday
Expect a pretty lengthy review on Free Comic Book Day. I came away with 19 different comics. And I want to be very objective on each one. Anyway, it is loads of reading, and if you did not get to go. Or if I review something you might like, it might be left over. A pretty spectacular turn-out in my small town. So, I will see you soon, after I thoroughly devour a variety of stories.

Don't ask, and I might not tell
I love to talk comics. I mean seriously tell you more than you wanted to know "talk about comics". And I know when I have done that too, I can see it on people's faces. Don't say to me, "Gee I used to read Spidey (or please not X-Men) what is going on now?" Well, let's see... and I am off... talk of clones, organic webbing, secret wars, and Avengers status. And I eventually need a napkin for spittle.
Hey, you asked... and there is alot of history. I suppose I could say well have you seen the movie... it is alot like that. In truth it is and it isn't. But mostly, that would be easier on everyone involved. "Oh by the way, before she died Gwen Stacy did the nasty with Norman Osborn and concieved his children.... who have accelerated aging... so they are only slightly younger than Spidey... and at times they want him dead." One comic... one event... do you see my problem now, but I can't hide the habit. I never have been able to.
Now... House of M. I am having a tough time explaining this one to myself.... both story-wise and financially. Hi, I am Justin, and I am an addict. Step away from the spinner racks... don't go where I have been.

Comics To Come
AMAZING FANTASY #8 $2.99- This an alluring title in premise. This one comic "Amazing Fantasy" is going to be the starting point for some new talent and new characters to get their feet wet. Theoretically in the hopes that a new series is in the works. The problem as a reader being that some things are not going to hold my interest. Like the next character run involving "Werewolf by Night" Anyway, I am kind of crossing my fingers that this Scorpion arc gives me a reason to exit early. If you like espionage, twists and turns then give this arc a shot.
DAREDEVIL REDEMPTION #4 (OF 6) $2.99- This has to be the first mini in a long long time that I am not wondering when it will end, rather I don't want it to end at all. I hope this mini is a precursor to the news that Hines will be taking over on DD (if Gaydos was included on art duties) that would be fantastic. Anyway, if you are not reading this, it is one of the most surprising DD stories in some time.
GLA #2 (OF 4) $2.99- Dan Slott... one man. The GLA ... one team. By the end of this you will wonder how a universe stays together. Okay, seriously, this is the perfect book for a Dan Slott fan... because when a team is second string... the ideas can take the chance of being great... and the writer pulls no punches here. Again one of the few minis I am anxious to follow and far to aware of the impending end.
HUMAN TORCH VOL 1 BURN DIGEST $7.99- This is a case of I wish I had known then. I wish I had known when this came out that Karl Kesel was the writer. I wish that at the same time that I had passed on the flop of a Venom series and not this. I wish... I wish my town stocked these digests. This is going to be a tough one to find.
POWER PACK #2 (OF 4) $2.99- This is just a fun book. A bit too simplistic, but I am hoping it hits the target audience. You got kids pick this up... planning for kids... pick this up. I don't care how cool the issue of DD dropping Bullseye was cool when you were a kid. You will feel different when it is your kid... and comics will be much worse. So save these comics... they are few and far between as it is.

Waiting for the Pros of Cons
Well, it has been a long day. A rather long beginning to my week actually. After the wedding, well I took in a huge breath of relief. But after that things took their long-awaited and much welcomed return to normalcy. Normalcy and financial security... and a lack of talk of big events and flowers and ... oh wait, I have done that blog. Anyway, after a weekend of attempts I have finally reached a contact of the Comic Con I will be attending. He informed me that it was one day, that there would be no guests, just various vendors. So, my question to you (my two readers) is whether I should spend money on this con or wait and see if another local con comes with more comic pros later this summer?
I went to Target today, I now officially don't like them as much. There was one new comic type book that I had not gotten... Spider-Girl... so I picked it up. I am sooooo ready for the big bookstore to come to town. My wife got "Phantom of the Opera" so that was alright, Happy Mother's Day mwahahaha. Tune into Blind Justice tonight. I hope my pal Al gets to. Blog is going to be short today, got this con dilemma.

Numbness
There is something to be said for family. Body heat. At least I had a couple of old radio shows to keep me company, Father Knows Best.... and Johnny Dollar... Insurance Investigator. Where I was told to buy Post Bran which is good, but so good for you. And the hot wheat breakfast with Roy Rogers on the box! Also from the Post family of products. Good times.
I am trying to plan a trip to a comic convention in two weeks, but it is really hard to plan these things with just a phone number. I cannot seem to get a hold of anyone... I am hoping one of the contacts listed has an e-mail address or something. Anyway, I figure if my best friend can go to a convention that same weekend so can I.
It was a good episode of Extreme Homemakeover last night, I thought. It was about a man who got shot and lost his sight. And needed a new home, so that he could be more independent and move more freely. Great on so many levels. This is one time I am glad my wife was not home, that guy makes all of us husbands look bad. What a sweet guy. Add to that you get to see some really neat thought processes go into the building of this home... When he walks in there is a path made of concrete and what goes off the path is a different texture, so he will know he is heading into the house. Various objects to give off sound around the yard like a windchime to know he is nearing the back yard. On a section of the walls in every room is a different surface, so that he can touch that surface and know where he is. It was all just really good, I highly recommend the follow-up program, "How'd They Do That".

Tum-tum Troubles
I hate food as an impulse buy. I hate high calorie junk food as a meal option. I hate hate hate buffets. All you can eat... it's a challenge. I looooove a challenge. When people tell me I can't do something. I love to prove them wrong. I may not do it all that well... but tell me I cannot do something and it is an invitation I probably won't turn down.
But buffets... ugh. There is no reward for "saving money" for "beating the system". Mostly because it is all mediocre food to begin with. So, with time I have learned not to accept the challenge, I ate sensibly... for the most part. And what is my reward for that... a rather uncomfortable 4:30 am case of heartburn. And some added bonuses. Thank goodness I did not eat alot.
Mostly what I hate about buffets, is the people. Noone knows buffet etiquette (if it ever existed). And I am not talking gross etiquette, although I am sure that could well be the case too. I am talking placement ettiquette. Everyone runs around with the idea that they are heading one way... and everyone else is heading that same way. Look up from your spaghetti... concoction long enough to see that this ain't an obstacle course.
My everything hurts ... oh mac and cheese from the box... next time I am eating in with you. You're next Mr. Hamburger Helper.

Innocent Bystanding
From the site of Peter David: When "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man," the new Spidey series coming from Marvel late this summer, hits the stands, it will be launching with a different creative team than previously announced: Mike Wieringo as artist, and yours truly as writer.
This is a great thing to wake up to, this and an actual e-mail from a friend have made my day. (It is a wonder I still have e-mail. My least favorite thing is swimming through the junk). This news has me smiling from ear to ear. I am a huge Peter David fan, and honestly, it was a situation of being a fan well before I knew who he was. I have his first Spider-Man issue that he speaks about. And the follow up issues the absolute high quality "Death of Jean Dewolffe"
I don't like the Hulk, and I learned a long time ago. Don't buy what you won't like. But then I hate interstellar space stories. And here was Captain Marvel, and as with most Peter David stuff, it caught me well into the series... a month or so before cancellation. But finally, something I get my ultimate fanboy wish granted. (Well, not ultimate... but the one with the most realistic chance of happening -- Get back to bed, Natasha) Anyway keep your eyes peeled also, because Peter David does not disappoint. And after House of M... jumping into Spidey will be simpler then writing my name, backwards... in pig-latin. Heh, just kidding.
Well, I think the blog might be a little less this week, I got this wedding so I will get comics late. And really my blog is nothing without all that. So enjoy our time apart... and make sure to ask your lawyer to lift that restraining order. Or beyond that you could admit the electric fence is a bit much... no? The moat then... I mean honestly an electric fence surrounding a moat... there has to be a zoning law that prohibits that.

One Man's Trash
The comic book trance. I am glad I don't get out all that often. At least where books are. I have to buy something, every single time. Take for example Target. This store recently came to our town, and for months preceding it's arrival, I had been anxious for it. Having heard stories of cheap collections of various books. Something between a graphic novel and a comic book... a holy grail for the impulse shopper like me. So, we finally got our Target, and for the first few weeks I had gone there several times never concious that barely a couple of days had passed, until friends and family would say, "Weren't you just there?"
It is a lousy selection for me admittedly, everything is lousy when you pick up almost every recent issue of interest in your local comic shop. But it never fails I will always sit there... and study every displayed one... later going so far as to look behind the ones that were shown. It is a trance. I would sit there for nearly an hour if I could weighing the options. I did find Gus Beezer on the first trip, and that was delightful. Every trip that followed got worse and worse, until I finally decided it is best to wait until either some new material comes in... or this material becomes deeply discounted or gotten rid of entirely (the last two options happen quite often) I bought the last Marvel digest in town about a week ago.
So, I mean this always happens. Every store that I know that concievably might have comics... the trance occurs. And at least 8 out of 10 times something is bought. And there is a new huge bookstore coming to town. Worse yet, part of my honeymoon. A big city comic shop. Bring the shock collar, I have a feeling I will be hard to pull away.

Panel to Panel Reviews
What a weekend, I am glad I finally got around to reading these issues.
Runaways #3- An issue with two cliff-hangers! Loads of action. If you aren't getting this title... well I can't say I blame you. It does have a lot of book. But every character is so easily distinguishable. And let me just say, seek out any issue. That is what I did. And this book was delightful. Did you ever watch the cartoons where the bad guys would team up against the hero(s)... and they would inevitably get power hungry, and screw the plan up. Well there was a breach in the opposing team, and it was the most natural, yet still bizarre turn of events I have ever seen. It may be hard to start up but Runaways is well worth the effort.
Young Avengers #3- This one never fails to make me think. Mostly because it is the last title that I would have expected to. A few more mysteries are resolved. And a huge threat is exposed, and the grown-ups, may have hindered these upstarts from taking down what I can only assume is one of the nastier baddies in the MU. This title has heart, and I am quoting another reviewer in saying that this is one of the better things to come out of Avengers Disassembled... resolution.
Fantastic Four #525- Well damn, I hope Karl Kesel is writing 526. He left me with a heck of a cliffhanger. I only hope that if he is, he ties things up nicely, I have little desire to continue this title without him. This was really fun, it's got the Kesel humor, and just enough twists and turns to make you smile in appreciation. It is not what he is about... but he does it well enough to tell a rather fantastic story. Pick it up if you are as much a fan of Kesel as I am.
Conan #15- This is the longest I have consistently read a Conan book. Which is strange to me now, as this book was readily available when I was a young teen at a local library for free. I was fickle then, I am only aware now that I have this great passion for comics and the only hinderance is a monetary one. This issue is a sort of vacation for the regular artist Cary Nord, and as such it was wonderful in execution. For the duration of the title every seven issues or so another installment into the life of Conan as a boy is told. This is part two. This issue was primal... it becomes exceedingly obvious how soft I am when I read something like this. I have been a boy in this story, the boy Conan crippled, who was content to be a scorekeeper in the children's games... but I yearn to be Conan. Let me just state that a part of this issue is violently graphic... and yet even at the most feral of moments what was the one thing to stop Conan in his tracks ... a woman. Oh sometimes the most classic of tales holds the most truth.
Wolverine #27- Wow, that cover is breathtaking, very much in the vein of Steranko. I will say this for Millar, his epic storylines do captivate. And it was probably the biggest spectacle Arkansas has ever seen (fictional or otherwise). This is another title that I did not start of buying. I jumped in when Millar and Romita Jr. did. I will probably exit the same way. I am not going to recommend this, you can find Wolverine anywhere... but if you are reading it, I hope you are still enjoying it. Non-stop, over-the-top, anxious for the claws to pop action.
Amazing Spider-Man #519- I owe J. Michael Strazynski some huge thank yous for this issue. Spider-Man feels fresh again. There are two things that JMS does exceedingly well, human emotion and realizing epic situations. A story that is both down-to-earth and out-of-this-world. The fact that maybe sometimes the super heroes dress up to razzle dazzle, and that behind all the goodness in people lies an even better people behind the curtains. I would recommend this issue. I also want to pay what I believe is a very big compliment. Mr. Deodato, your art felt like the evolution, of a person who I think is a master of the craft even now, Mr. Gene Colan. Excellent stuff.

Comics to Come
MARVEL PREVIEWS MAY 2005 EXTRAS- I used to be able to tell people to get this. It is a wealth of information pertaining to the comics that will be shipping in a future month. That was before I found out that you could apparently do that on the internet anyway. But wait... there was still a full issue inside this every month to boot. Then that switched to 7 page snippets, which you can find on the internet as well (but I don't go looking) Now there is very little that you cannot already find elsewhere for free... you can see some action figures and other merchandise that will be shipping, and you can hold it in your hand. This is sad, I went from convincing people to wondering why I even bother picking this up.
CONAN #15 $2.99- I have to be honest, the only thing holding me to this title is the writer and artist. I have enjoyed most everything that I have read from Kurt Busiek. And I absolutely love the work of Cary Nord... honestly love it. I can find more of Kurt's stuff... that is not always the case with Nord. And Nord is like watching a man constantly progressing. With Kurt it is watching a man already at the top of his game. Don't believe me, seek out Astro City (not in my library though, I still have their copies of the TPBs) I do enjoy the stories on occasion I thought issue 2 was phenominal, but I would rather read the artist on something else.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #519 $2.25- K, Strazynski... this is your chance to kick it into gear again. I am ready for you to knock my socks off. Give me a reason to love the fact that you have full control over this title. Show me that when I am reading Amazing it feels truly original. I remember upon your debut... you had one question "Did the powers come from the radioactivity of the spider... or did the spider have the powers... and wanted to release them before death." Did I care? No. But it rocked Peter Parker's world. So give Pete something to get a little flustered about.
FANTASTIC FOUR #525 $2.99 - What is this doing on my list? Oh right, somewhere between one writer's finale and another's debut sits a pretty little Karl Kesel issue waiting for my hands. I am also a fan of Kesel. And yes, yet again I would rather read his stuff elsewhere.
RUNAWAYS #3 $2.99- K, this is the summary. A group of youth who found out that their parents want to destroy the universe... made sure that never happened. They got betrayed in the process by one of their own. Now as they search the city looking for other runaways, they are suddenly given a new purpose. Find a Runaway who will destroy all the heroes in the future... Oh yeah and they got another group of former child superheroes... chasing after there happy asses for a sizeable sum. So this issue promises huge conflict... and never fails to deliver. The writer says this could be what a relaunch meant for the X-Men. I am not one to stand in the way of a man's dream. Unless your Hitler... seriously, stop calling me.
WOLVERINE #27 $2.25- Wow, the veils of one story are lifted, just to jolt us straight into a huge huge event. *Ahem* He took on the good guy's with only a brainwash and some adamantium blades. Now watch in awe as he takes on... loads and loads of bad guys. It is better than that, but I couldn't tell you why. Could be Jazzified John Romita Jr.
YOUNG AVENGERS #3 $2.99- I absolutely loved the final pages last issue. Great job by the artist. And the writing... well the guy knows how to keep me coming back. Unlike Gravity, this doesn't really have the new kid feel, so much as what the hell is that kid even doing here? Oh and Jessica Jones. She may well be the most frequent female supporting character over the past few years. Seriously, I think even Wolvie has been in fewer cross-over issues.
COMICS BUYERS GUIDE JUNE 2005 #1605 $5.99- Well, I had something cool to say, I really did. But that was all the way up there. And we are all the way down here. This is a great resource for everything to do with comics... a fan of the Silver age... DC or Marvel ... it's here. Want to know what currently are the hot issues to purchase? Here too. Plenty of Reviews? You guessed it. Loads of fun and well worth the money? Seriously, tell me you get the idea so I can stop typing to myself.

Blind Justice
This has to be my favorite show, it is the only one I will stay up to watch, just so I can tape it commercial-free. There are a great many detractors to this show, and the funny thing is all of those detractors... whose complaints were reasonable before the show started. Have not gotten to see that each complaint was addressed, and handled in a competent manner. Dunbar has no powers... the special effects used to show what he "sees". That is what his mind puts together from the things people say, and truth be told it has either been exaggerated or flat out wrong.
He carries a gun. I am not sure if it is even loaded, though. The force is reluctant to let him have it, but even more surprising is that beneath his denial, the main character is even more reluctant. Past the instinct point, he almost seems shaken... do I think he could use it? In the circumstance he has mentioned... a belly fight. I think he is more than equipped. Could they give him a more effective weapon later on? Absolutely.
My one disappointment with last night's show... no therapist. I got to say the retired (former boss I guess?) Was nowhere near what I was looking for. Anyway, if you aren't watching now, you are missing out. Great character development, loads of inner and exterior conflict. I wish I could say something like, "Next week, is the perfect time to jump in on the series!" I have no idea, I do know that you won't regret it.

Comics... of course
Wow, this is a great time of month. Not only do I get my weekly shipping list, but also all the comics expected to ship in July. Too say that Marvel dominates the list would be a huge understatement. Except for one comic... Marvel is the list. In July, Marvel does House of M(HoM)... a reality-altering (or could be alternate dimension) project that spans many many many Marvel titles.
For right now, I could care less. I want to get the main series because it is Bendis. And the main story is at least going to have some effect. And I am getting the Spider-Man:HoM series... because it is Mark Waid... great style... great feel for it. Other than that, I am not touching HoM unless it is already part of one of my regular titles. Just stop telling me that it will change the Marvel Universe as we know it...
A couple of new series have piqued my interest greatly. Gravity and Defenders... both look to be very good books. Gravity because it is a new kid on the block book... which means loads of cameos, intros, and misunderstandings. And Defenders because it looks to be a hilarious good time in the vien of GLA. (At least I hope so, the chance for humor is the only thing truly tying me to the title)
And my one DC book, well I had to make sure that it was going to be well worth it. Of course it is All-Star Batman and Robin. A fresh look at a character I have only watched from a distance, by a man that I would trust with any character in the world. Frank Miller. And with a combined price that is 10 dollars below my budget... I don't need any suggested comic additions for quite some time.

Rest
What an exhausting weekend. Kids have entirely too much energy. And apparently have very little of an idea how to leave things alone. I was over at my mother's house this weekend. It is truly a wonder that the place has objects still standing in it. Actually, it might be better just to strip the house bare. Cute kids though, one is just as reckless and crazy as anyone I know... and the other well she can make you smile in the middle of lecturing her.
I love the simplistic and almost innate hierarchy these kids have. The bigger kid is the boss of the little kid... all the way up, and this is alot of kids. And despite your pointing out contrary it continues, and can be even worse then the behavior the older kids are scolding. And while I appreciate my older siblings help quite a bit. There is a consistency that was lost the whole weekend. They knew the rules... they were just not always applied. But like I said, when my soon to be wife collapsed midday from a night of playing Magic with my older brother till one, I was very glad my sister was there.
And I don't know why, but they really seem to be hard on the middle sibling imparticular. I will admit she is verbose, and that can be annoying. But I don't see anything terribly wrong with it. I did go a little easy on her (and probably usually do) this weekend, I think she sprained her arm. But honestly, she just reminds me ... of me. Granted she does tend to be over dramatic... and complain... and all sorts of other unflattering things. But everybody does at some point. Being a kid is hard enough today anyway, much less trying to be the kid everyone wants.
Anyway, I need a break... might be on tomorrow I might not. If not... um... tell Scarlett I do give a damn.

Nostalgia
I really should have saved yesterday's title for today. Nostalgia is a nasty nasty thing. I was in a video game store in town (well more of a city, but isn't that irrelevant to the point of the sentence?). Anyway, when I was there, I spotted this game, Time Traveler. I remember seeing this in St. Louis... in some little out of the way video game museum... Holograms...It was all 3-D and all really very cool. I was what in eighth grade I think, just beginning it so 13. Anyway... I didn't know the gameplay of it... I just saw this little cowboy walking around on this chessboard type surface.
First of all it should be stated... 99 percent of the novelty is lost by putting this on a TV screen.... now it feels like watching a movie. And a very low budget one at that. The gameplay is a bit jarring, but more than that you have a very limited amount of time to react. It is shoot them before they shoot you. Or in one case... drag you off to their cave/lovenest for a little-- well you are bedded by what appears to be a rather husky cavewoman... off-camera of course. Anyway, nostalgia is a lying she-devil...
I also bought Van Helsing for the PS2. So far this game is not bad... there is one factor that drops it down quite a bit for me. Lack of interactive camera. in other words I want to control what the character sees... not have the camera controlling me. I don't know what it is that makes a handful of games drop this capability, when they desperately need it. In Mario it was fine to have the one view... but if you are going to make any advanced fighting game with multiple enemies and a surrounding enviroment. You need to be able to focus on areas at a moment's notice. Luckily I only paid a bit for each game. But I tell you a camera locked game can make you feel like you paid too much quite quickly.
I got comics too. Ultimates met my expectations... Powers exceeded them. MK Spider-Man was ok... here's a tip, don't show your issues ending in Marvel Previews... it was a let down. Black Panther... it was a pretty good week so I will say that it also met expectations... which is good enough. And Mary Jane Homecoming, I really consider this the apple to my oranges. It was really very good. Expect a review on Tales from Riverdale #1 coming next week. Have a good weekend.

Unfulfilled Expectations
Okay, today is Thursday. The day I get my comics. So I thought yet again, I would speculate on the quality and expectations of my comics based on solicitations only. BATMAN YEAR ONE DELUXE EDITION HC - Ok, this one I won't be getting for quite sometime.(Remember, wedding) But I want to take this opportunity to plug away. This is the definition of a must-have. This is Miller... yes that Miller. Frank "fubugubu" Miller. This is "one of the most important and critically acclaimed Batman adventures ever. In addition to telling the entire dramatic story of Batman's first year fighting crime, this collection includes new introductions by Miller and Mazzucchelli, loads of reproductions of original pencils, promotional art, unseen Mazzucchelli Batman art, Richmond Lewis' color samples, script pages and other surprises." (taken direct from solicit). I don't care if you don't like Batman... pretend it's DD and pretend the fledgling James Gordon, is now newly turned cop Ben Urich. This HC is 20 bucks... and believe me with all the extras it is worth it... at only ten bucks over the original.
BLACK PANTHER #3 $2.99- I support diversity in the MU, I support John Romita Jr. Beyond that this book has shown me previously that it is a good story. A bit simplistic in plot, (or maybe I am too used to Bendis plot) but that factor also makes it the type of book that you would know almost instantly it is not the book for you. So far I enjoy it quite a bit.
MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #13 $2.99- I enjoyed the last arc. While it was back and forth and jumbled and simplistic... love one issue dislike the next. It was fresh blood in the Spideyverse. Apparently Marvel is going for a new team a year on this book, it would be cool if they maintained that, but highly doubtful. Anyway this is the same writer for Black Panther, I don't know how pleased I will be, but I always give a new series at least two issues (introductions are tough) so I will treat issue 13 as a new issue and go from there.
MARY JANE HOMECOMING #2 (OF 4) $2.99 Um, I get this book for my sister.... what already you don't buy that... damn. I started off getting the first series for my sister, this one is for me. The big premise... a villian of the month? A meglomaniac with a world domination fetish? No... something so dire... so earthshattering-- I dare not say it. She has to try to make it to homecoming... with a date... or at the very least... a dress. Relationship woes, financial woes, and a serious super hero crush.
POWERS #10 (MR) $2.95- What can I say, the quality in this title is consistent month after month. And again it is one of those titles that you can have an almost instant vibe about liking or not. Try it... if you are an adult ;)
SHE HULK VOL 2 SUPERHUMAN LAW TP $14.99- Ladies and Gentlemen... boys and girls... comics fans of all ages. This is the Greatest Trade Paperback on earth! Ok, it is definetly up there... you don't have to be a fan of the main character to be a fan of the book, because this will make the character mean something so special to everyone. And this is the most fun I have had reading a book.
ULTIMATES 2 #5 $2.99- Oh man, this is going to be.... just trust me. Knock down drag out... The Good vs the "Could be Delusional but still Good" Good. This book has done for Thor what the new She-Hulk did. I love a character I had no previous interest in. Consider this an Avengers for people who don't really like the Avengers. Anyway, can't wait for this one.

Tuesday Again?
Feels like it comes around at least once a week, honestly. Ok I was at Line of Fire reviews (www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/reviews/) and I have to say, these guys are good, a nice selection of reviews. And more than one review of the same comic sometimes. May seem redundant to some, but I might agree with Ray Tate one day, and Dave Wallace the next. I did learn though, that I make alot of excuses for my books. Secret War comes to mind. Every review you find on the site is an honest critique of the work presented. Unlike my excuse, which was well it was confusing when it started. Bendis will tie it up in the end.
Anyway, I just wanted to tip my hat, to a great group of reviewers for what I am sure is a mostly thankless job. That being said, I love comics. So I will still do my thing. Which is praise until mediocrity is staring me in the face (like Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #2). Blind Justice tonight, this one looks to be very good. The second Vol of She-Hulk comes out tomorrow, this is your chance to own the full phenominal 12 issue run before the Hardcover comes out (I wish).

Excess
Weddings are not meant for men. Honestly. I can't look at the great big scheme of things, I certainly can't look at the cost of things. But instead of having one day taken out of my life... one day and then wedded bliss. I have had months... of back and forth... and this instead of that. I have had months of my bride to be frazzled to no end. And this is from the outside looking in.
This is not even our wedding. This is insanely fast planning, and all for what? So, that we can live as we have for the past 3 years? I don't care about cakes and candles and dresses and flowers and seating and such. I care about my family... I wonder how it would be if I were the first cryogenically frozen husband. I would be a joy to live with. "What the in-laws are coming over? Oh, Justin won't care... he is cool with that. Hahaahheehehee."
A friend of mine told me, I will wake up and it will be over. God, I hope he is right, I would like nothing more than to have this done with. I need my family back... I could actually toast to that.

Anything and Everything
What a tame weekend... honestly. I am not saying it wasn't fun, or anything like that. Just that I could have used some friendly conversation or visiting distraction. Yesterday was pretty great, I hit that local comic show and spent only a bit more than I had allowed myself, but with the wedding approaching ever faster it felt like too much.
I have a pile of appearances now that are at least half the size of DD Vol 1... at least. And that is not counting his appearances in my recent collection of ongoings. I am seriously considering selling quite a few of my now finished series. Marvel Knights Spider-Man. My runs of Amazing. Things like that. If anybody has any advice for me, let me know, I want to get both a fair price for me first, whatever the buyer pays after that is fine.
My Dad and the twins came by to help me adapt my new excercise bike. Should not be too long and I will be peddling during commercial breaks. Hey one has to start somewhere. right? They were quite pleased that my house was pretty clean. Only two rooms that practically have mountains of clutter... and one of them has a door. My sister actually enjoyed reading a comic... this was really something for me to see. How do I know she was enjoying it? She would not leave until she was done. Problem is, this is one series that is on the cancellation block. At least it got her attention. Now if I could just find a series for each member of my immediate family.
Well, I hope somebody out there had a more exciting Sunday then I did.

Comments on Comics
Amazing Fantasy #7- This is a comic that starts off cliche with the intent of wanting to do so. At least that is what it states more or less. After that though, I find myself in the frame of mind of been there done that. It is hard not to do in a medium so dependent on characters lasting decades upon decades. A young girl caught between two warring covert entities. The first is A.I.M (the bad guys) S.H.I.E.L.D. (the good guys). Now the thing about this sort of story is that it depends on mystery...spies... agents. It is all part and parcel. So, I cannot really fully display my confusion until after I am sure questions are not answered. There are a few straggling aspects though, that leave me bewildered. This first issue is coated in and out with plenty of references to the MU, but no mention of the previous Scorpion? And also for fans of Dan Slott's recent She-Hulk run, this Scorpion will remind you of his Southpaw a great deal. And I couldn't help but feel that there stories could be inter-related somehow. But it is doubtful.
GLA #1: Thank god I read an interview with Dan Slott about this first. While I know Dan has done some darker series. I had not yet read any. It was always, "I will pick it up if I see it type of thing". Well, I have found it. Let me just say that if you are a fan of She-Hulk, or an adult fan of Batman Adventures there is plenty in here for you. In fact, it was one of the only problems I had was reminding myself that I had to keep a relaxed but serious frame of mind. (Nothing a second reading wouldn't fix) Pelletier shows his flexibility as an artist 100 fold here. And the main character well, you know how depressed Peter Parker can get... well think if Peter Parker took it one step further... tried to end his life... and then couldn't even do that. One of the things that amazed me, was that one of the characters who I grew the closest too, I knew nothing about beforehand, and she actually had the least to say, but I am in love.
Marvel Team-Up #7- This series grows on me every month... more and more. First off there are too few Moon Knight appearances, and too few done this well. I am not a huge Moon Knight fan, I have a passing knowledge of the character, but just based on this issue I would give a solo series a try. Spidey's reference of Batman was priceless. And what an upgrade for Ringmaster. He is silly and an odd ball. But it just goes to show you, give the delusional enough power, and you could still be in for a world of hurt. And what an awesome ending.
Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #2: Ok, first I want to praise Marvel. These covers have been real attention grabbers, and the consistency of such pleasant looking art is going to be a plus. Now for the bad news. Are you not wanting new readers? Because one would be hard pressed to tell going from the first issue to this one. We are introduced to six rogues... six. That at least from the perspective of a new reader of this series... none of them Spidey has met. None of them have met each other... Why would they team up? Why would they care about a guy they have never met? The next is that a proper display of the threat of five of the six villians is never shown. Doc Ock takes center stage more than once, but that is it. How does Ock automatically know Jameson? And why oh why are we introduced to the Daily Bugle as if Peter has been working there a long time? If we are going from the start of the series... we never even saw him go into ask for the job. This is a case of getting a Stan/ Ditko issue and hoping it would just work. This kind of thinking tore down Marvel Age, and will tear down this new attempt, at least do a little grunt work. This comic looks good... just make it read the same or better.
Power Pack #1: While I don't think this is officially Marvel Adventures, it is geared towards those readers. The beginning is a great way to start the story I think, it lets you know that you are going into something that is not going to be the same old story, a let down might be that on the surface it is. But it is still highly enjoyable. One of the best aspects is that little Katie Powers (the youngest) seems to be the most powerful. The kids feel cliche but I think that is ok, kids are a somewhat universal aspect of humanity. Still young enough to adapt and be fun. One aspect that I thought needed a bit more work was the depiction of the villian to me he seemed far too lackluster and boring in appearance. The real treat of this issue. Was a seperate back story about Franklin Richards a son of two members of the FF... and one of his adventures at home. In the words of Marty Mcfly "You may not like it, but your kids... are going to love it."
Strange #5- It is almost over... well probably not, it says nothing about being a Limited Series, but with any luck the price is almost over. The main character Stephan Strange, takes leaps as a character this issue. Last issue he saw finally the supernatural, the bad, and the ugly. And this week he has more than willingly taken on a more prominent role to prepare in battling. There is still some reluctance as to how he will be fighting, but only because he questions he is role as essentially an ultimate guardian from evil. There is great conflict here, and truly horrific visuals from Brandon Peterson. One imparticular, of a dark force entering the home of Strange's family has a sickening creepiness. This is truly still a series that is a treat for Strange fans and newcomers (like me) alike.
Okay, I have now typed all this for a second time. Have a good Friday, and hopefully I will be back tomorrow to tell you of my finds at a local card and comic show.

To Each Their Own
I am chasing my Thursday. Amazing how a few subtle changes can make an otherwise intended easy-going day go into some sort of bogged down reflection. Today was literally a battle just to get a moment to do this blog. Right now I have the simultaneous music of my fiancee's video game, and my son's children's show playing havoc even a room away. Today. is the day I go for comics, I am crossing my fingers that my comic shop guy shows up for more than a half an hour.
I managed to catch 3/4s of "Eyes". It really is too hard to tell if this show will stay on my viewing list. It jumps all over the place, and yet that is what makes it fun. The main character is enough for me to like. It is the supporting cast I find myself wanting to find out about. A diverse group to be sure, and it seems a new cast member was added. There is a character that I am excited to watch next week. A mousy girl who has been given the chance to be a vital member to this group of private eyes. I get the feeling by the end of the season she will be the one to surprise me, or pull the rug out from under as it were.
I watched Blind Justice again. It is better than most other shows, I will give it that. But this episode still seemed to be missing something for me. And there are alot of things being danced around... lightly touched on and then pulled away from. While I appreciate this as a story telling device, as a viewer it is frustrating. At least pick something and bring it out in the open, that is why next week is going to be better for me I think, this thing between Dunbar and Russo can be taken to another level. I want them to keep fighting, but there is a progression that needs to be made at the same time. It is probably why I liked the preceding episode with Dunbar's ex-partner. Granted I do seem to enjoy the character moments far more than the cases. But if I love 90% of the shows I am okay with that.
Hopefully, there will be some reviews on comics tomorrow. Maybe I can actually stay a reasonable pace behind my Friday.

Here comes the rain
It has been pretty much a constant since I woke up at close to five this morning. I would say it has tended to make me melancholy. But that is just me. I feel like I am just a day behind.... every day. Anyway, on to bigger and better things... cabbages and kings. Blind Justice, okay I am going to be honest, plot wise to me this was the weakest episode. I will give it a repeated viewing today, last night I could not really sit and watch it. Constant interruptions.
One thing I did like and always will like is the characterizations of the main players. I liked seeing a breech in Dunbar's super cop persona. It is fascinating to watch these characters become more real with each passing episode. If I have one complaint on the whole, I want to see the two female characters explored... and Russo's partner... these three people most of all seem to be on the fence. We know where Dunbar stands... Russo... even the Lt.
I will be watching the second episode of Eyes on ABC. It is the only thing I watch on Wednesdays. I will definetly not be sad to let it go, but at the same time, it did have an intriguing first episode. It is what draws me to Alan Shore on Boston Legal. The seemingly bastard with a heart of gold as it were.

Comics to Come
This is the point where I discuss the comics to come, I enjoyed this so much last week, that I decided to try it again.
AMAZING FANTASY #7 $2.99 - This is Marvel's attempt at showcasing something new. Consider it a series of minis, the first was the story of Arana... a latino teen given some armor and a sudden desire to fight a secret society. This most recent story begininning with #7 is the story of a new Scorpion (The old one is now Venom) anyway, yet again a young girl, this story is set to be laced with espionage, and traitors, and all the signs of at least something fun. I will let you know on Thursday.
GLA #1 (OF 4) $2.99- Perhaps one of the more anticipated comics for me in recent months, could end up pretty controverisial too. At least among the fan community. These rejects of the Marvel Universe have gathered in the absence of the Avengers to fill a void. If they don't all get killed. This promises to be a very humorous... kind of dark tale. For any of you who want an alternative to Identity Crisises and Avengers: Disassembled, this might well be it.
MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #2 $2.50- This is the newest attempt at what could be a seemingly endless changes to the kids line at Marvel. Although, I had said even before it was concieved that Adventures had always been an easy way to make the distinction that you have stepped into a younger comic. Anyway, fingers crossed that this one gets some originality and staying power, kids need more options.
MARVEL TEAM-UP #7 $2.25- This is quickly becoming one of my favorite titles. While it has alot of faults, it also has a great bit of heart. We are only 7 issues in and already I cannot count the number of Spidey appearances. This time it is Spidey and Moon Knight (mostly) see the great thing about this title is that it is not confined. Kirkman gets the chance to take a ride around the Marvel U, and he grabs the keys and bolts. The worst thing... watching the main villian hide in the shadows... he will be what ties the seperate issues together. But they are more than good enough to read on their own. I know a few of my friends are waiting for #9 DD and Luke Cage, and I of course will be here to catch them up.
POWER PACK #1 (OF 4) $2.99- This was apparently a fan favorite from the late 70s early 80s. I don't remember it, but my main reason for picking this one up (if in fact my comic shop guy got it) is for the kids. At the very least my son and his soon to be sibling(s). Anyway from the preview I have seen, it looks very promising.
STRANGE #5 (OF 6) $3.50- Okay, this series has been very pretty, I will give Marvel that. A more mainstream introduction to the character of Dr. Strange? Yep, it has a modern feel and kind of got rid of the sillyness. Sara Barnes tells a much better story than she did with her arc on Spectacular Spider-Man. And Brandon Peterson has to be one of the best talents I have seen. In fact, upon reflection the only thing that bothers me is the price tag, oh and the fact that it had to bother me six times. For the rest of you not buying this mini, let me just say a trade would be well worth it.
TALES FROM RIVERDALE DIGEST #1 $2.39- You might call Riverdale and it's patrons my guilty pleasure. It's not really nostalgia... when I was a kid to say read Archie, was like saying watch Leave it to Beaver or the Brady Bunch for a minute. I got into them, I think through some relative passing along older comics. I love these books, Digests imparticular, because when I have the need to just read something, get my fill for my money, I can never go wrong. Tales from Riverdale is a compilation of the supporting cast, with of course appearances by Archie, Betty and Veronica. I can't blame Archie Entertainment for wanting to put a couple of #1 s out there, it has drawn me in. More on another Archie Digest in a few weeks.
VERTIGO FIRST TASTE TP (MR) $4.99- I missed the Vertigo craze the first time around. Not surprising since it was ten years ago, and I had an innate hatred for DC. Anyway, this is some of the #1 s from the hit line of comics, 6 of them to be exact. It is most definetly getting picked up. (Although the follow up review might be sometime, as I will have to get this one online www.talesofwonder.com)
SUPERMAN BATMAN #18 $2.95- This is on the chopping block for me, I have a fondness for both stars of the series. A passing knowledge, but I just could not find myself caring, the recent storyline feels like a jumbled alternate reality, time traveling mess. I am dropping this in favor of the Frank Miller/Jim Lee revamp Ultimate Batm... oops All-Star Batman and Robin.
ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #17 $2.25- This is another one that has lost me. I am not a fan of the FF. But I thought a fresh take, and a fresh start might allow me to become a fan. The first 8 issues had me... I could see what all the fuss is about. I mean I always kind of liked the characters. You know, when Spidey guest starred in their title. I never liked Reed Richards, while in guest shots he may seem like the answer man, in the FF itself, he was a self-involved bore, and heaven help us if Doom was the villian that month... those two could lull a tropical storm. Which is why I have been a bit disappointed with this title. Ellis is a good storyteller, no denying that, last months cliffhanger blew me away, but in preceding months... taking an entire issue to get from finding out about Doctor Doom a whole issue to talk about going to fight him. and then to finally fight him... well they can just keep pulling the die-hard fans along. It was a hell of a fight when they got there though.
K, that ends a rather long list of comics, although nothing like the last week of September in 2004 that will forever be known as the week I slept on the couch. AMAZING FANTASY #7 $2.99 - This is Marvel's attempt at showcasing something new. Consider it a series of minis, the first was the story of Arana... a latino teen given some armor and a sudden desire to fight a secret society. This most recent story begininning with #7 is the story of a new Scorpion (The old one is now Venom) anyway, yet again a young girl, this story is set to be laced with espionage, and traitors, and all the signs of at least something fun. I will let you know on Thursday.
GLA #1 (OF 4) $2.99- Perhaps one of the more anticipated comics for me in recent months, could end up pretty controverisial too. At least among the fan community. These rejects of the Marvel Universe have gathered in the absence of the Avengers to fill a void. If they don't all get killed. This promises to be a very humorous... kind of dark tale. For any of you who want an alternative to Identity Crisises and Avengers: Disassembled, this might well be it.
MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #2 $2.50- This is the newest attempt at what could be a seemingly endless changes to the kids line at Marvel. Although, I had said even before it was concieved that Adventures had always been an easy way to make the distinction that you have stepped into a younger comic. Anyway, fingers crossed that this one gets some originality and staying power, kids need more options.

For Better Or Worse
What is your biggest goal in life? In what way do you want to be remembered? I was watching something on television. Little House on the Prairie, this recently released one that is being shown on Saturdays for the next few weeks. And it has really gotten me thinking, have we truly progressed? These people don't just work to provide, they work to survive. Now, some of you are saying, "I work to survive, I earn the money that keeps me secure." But, the option is there not to... and people take it. I take it. And truthfully, how many of us have the skills to survive if dollars meant nothing?
It is not just that, but in watching there was this... troubling sense of danger being around every corner. I almost want to scream at the television. "Don't stop to help the stranded wagon... move along. You could get mugged" What do they do, they say, "Hop in the wagon, oh yes that is a rather large carving knife..." Okay, so the people turned down the offer to hitch a ride with them, but the offer was made. And then, they get settled they find a piece of land... and there is this really squirrely fellow (cute in a sitcom) fodder for an institution nowadays. And they just say, "Hey, come on help us build our house... hang out with the girls. You got a little bit of drool there... oh what's that you want to use that noose to wipe it off... go right ahead"
Honestly, where the hell does it say you have to treat people like they exist? I mean really isn't it hurt them before they hurt us... don't trust them as far as you can throw them? I mean here was this nice family sitting in new territory.... a nice bit of isolation if you will. And they go and screw it up. Although to be fair, once some Indians came around they had the gun ready, good ol' American ingenuity there.
Okay, if you can't tell I am joking. If you want to take away something... anything from this. Let it be that: We all strive to be better, and sometimes we are too fearful... to see that we are walking backwards, but it does not mean we shouldn't keep trying, does it?

Another Pleasant Valley... Friday
Actually it isn't pleasant at all... um... April Fool's. Not much I want to talk about to end the week. My comics were all pretty good. Even got a bonus... DC's 80 page $1 giant... Countdown To Infinite Crisis. One thing that I will mention even though I have not read it, I love the fact that they went a little retro on the pages. It's been a long time since my hands touched comic pages that weren't glossed over. I noticed they had the same approach to the Fallen Angel and Hard Time trades. Makes for a cheaper package I assume, and I won't hide my feelings in saying that if Marvel did this, and it meant lower prices, I would be ecstatic.
I want to praise issue 8 of the Pulse. It helped me out quite a bit... it was as if the veil had been lifted... and for some of it tossed aside. Michael Lark (What if Karen Page...) yet again proves to be a quick budding talent at Marvel, and while I can't credit the colorist by name as of right now. I do want to give them a pat on the back. And Bendis, well you gave me an accessibly fresh take on things thanks to the mysterious agent on the phone.
DD: Redemption #3 ... wow. This issues ending still has me in disbelief. Truly a sick example of just what someone is capable of. This is a bold take on a true story, and it safe to say it was kicked up a notch. And I have to give credit to writer and artist here... the depiction was that much more believable because of a concerted effort.
Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #12 - The end of a great arc. Spidey and the Goblin face off again... traces of been there done that. But I think Millar wrote this for just that reason. The Goblin needed to be... the cream of the crop in Spidey's rogue gallery, and this proved what a sick *** he really is. It puts alot of questions into play, is Spidey not really doing anything all that great being Spidey? Is he just allowing himself to avoid the real world? It cements for Peter Parker the fact that Black Cat has never stopped loving him... something he has seemingly been oblivious too. And while kidnappings are a dime a dozen, I really felt for May... Millar paints a disturbing picture of what it is like on the other side of the battles. I can't wait for the new arc... and the new team.
